A Finchville man was killed Saturday night when he ran off the road and hit a tree head-on. After that accident, an elderly man was injured when he struck the first vehicle, which had spun back out in the road after hitting the tree.A report from Kentucky State Police said that Dennis C. Murphy, Jr., 28, died from injuries he sustained when he was ejected from his 2001 pickup truck. The report said that Calvin A. Hall, 86, of Louisville, was transported to The University of Louisville Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, but the hospital reported his condition as serious on Monday.
The second accident happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
Hall was traveling west on Ky. 148 (Fisherville Road) about four miles past Finchville when his car struck Murphy's pickup, which had come to rest in the westbound lane.
Shelby County Deputy Coroner Jeff Ivers said Murphy died at the scene of the first accident. Neither Murphy nor Hall was wearing a seat belt.
The KSP report did not list a reason why Murphy ran off the road. Simpsonville Fire Chief Walter Jones, who was on standby for the accident, said he did not think the crash was weather-related.
The accident was similar to a crash which happened Dec. 4 on Smithfield Road when a woman flipped her car and landed upside down in the road. She was later hit by another car.
Murphy worked at Waste Management as a front load driver. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 783, and was the son of Dennis and Yandell Murphy of Finchville.
Services for Murphy will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Shannon Funeral Home.
