A new fire station could reduce emergency response times in one of the city's fastest growing areas, according to local fire officials.
But it would not likely reduce insurance rates for the hundreds of households on the city's northside. Most already live within a five-mile radius of the city's Main Street fire station and receive the lowest fire insurance rates in Shelby County, according to local insurance agents. Proximity to fire stations and fire hydrants partly determine those rates.
