Fairdale -- Eastern (6-1) ran away from Shelby County with a big second quarter, holding on through the second half to win 64-54 in the quarterfinal game of the King of the Bluegrass Tournament Saturday night.
Eagle Remy Abell led the second-quarter onslaught, hitting three 3s and scoring six points in the paint to put Eastern up 40-24 at halftime.
Shelby County lost much of the game on the boards, and were out-rebounded 39-27 by Eastern, ranked third in state-wide preseason polls. The rebounding especially hurt on defense, where Eastern had 20 second-chance points.
The Rockets played up to Eastern's speed, but lacked the precision to execute offensively, rushing passes and shots. Senior guard Boomer Beckley led the Rockets with 18 points.
Beckley's eight points in the third quarter and Cache Tomlinson's three to open the fourth quarter brought Shelby within 47-41. But Eastern's dominance on the boards kept Shelby from making a comeback.
Shelby County (5-2) will continue tournament play Monday against Knott County Central at 6 p.m.
