Everything should be just ducky for this year's Shelbyville Horse Show Jubilee.
A new event added this year will be the Jubilee Saddlebred Duck Race. It's a chance to root for your favorite duck to swim, or rather float, across the finish line first, earning $300 for the win. Second place gets $200 and first place gets $100.
"The last place duck will get a surprise gift," said Shelby Development Corporation Executive Director and duckmaster Eilene Collins. "But they don't get to keep the duck."
The duck race is set for 11 a.m. at Red Orchard Park. Shelby County firefighters will dump the ducks in Clear Creek Park after everyone has drawn names and numbers.
The pink, yellow and blue plastic ducks are weighted on the bottom so they float upright rather than sideways, Collins said. The cost is $3 per duck or $5 for two ducks. Lunch will be sold during the event.
Also this year, adults will have an opportunity to play on the sidewalks just as the kids have for the last couple of years.
The adult "Concert Chalk Talk" will be held in conjunction with "Picnic in the parking lot" on Friday, July 25. Adults will have a chance to express their creativity on the sidewalks from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church parking lot on Main Street. Chalk is furnished; the prize for best chalking is art supplies.
"We got the idea for an adult chalking contest from the parent volunteers who were there with the kids last year," Collins said.
The concert, with Tom Hood, will go from 6-8 p.m. in the parking lot. There will also be a downtown arts walk that evening.
Also new this year will be a custom car show on Saturday, July 26 from 6-10 p.m. Main Street will be closed from 7th to 4th streets for the show.
Also on Saturday, July 26, Jubilee will have two concerts downtown instead of just one as it has in years past. Lewis Mathis will perform in Veteran's Park at noon. Leo and the Moonlighters will perform at the Street Party concert, also in Veteran's Park, starting at 7 p.m.
This year's Shelbyville Horse Show will be July 30 to August 2 at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. The shows start at 7 each evening.
