The Collins boys’ golf team graduated all five of its starters from last year’s Region 6 Tournament, but new coach Lance Alexander has been pleased with what he’s seen so far.
“I’m very impressed, very encouraged,” said Alexander, who was hired to guide the Titans late last month. “I like what I’m seeing so far.”
Replacing the departed quintet, which finished sixth at the region tourney last fall, won’t be easy but the process began Thursday, when Collins opened its season with a match at Spencer County.
This year’s squad won’t be so senior heavy, with only three - Blanton Creque, Hugh Romine and Farouk Migliore. Of those, only Romine played last year. Creque, a standout placekicker for the Titans football team, is one of several newcomers.
A pair of juniors also return. They are Jake Coleman and Jonathan Overstreet. Coleman has been solid in the preseason, according to Alexander.
“He’s showing a lot of potential and playing pretty well in practice,” the coach, the team’s third in three years, said recently.
The squad also includes two sophomores – Evan Early and Tyler Zimmerman (who returns from last year) – as well as five freshman led by Jacob Feltner. Feltner, who was on the team last year, had a solid summer playing local junior events.
“Jake is holding his own,” Alexander said.
That’s something that Alexander, who also works at Weissinger Hills Golf Course, hopes his team can do this season.
“The top five are looking very good, I’m very impressed as a first-year coach,” he said. “They’d like to go to the state tournament, and I think they can if they continue with the road they’re on.”
The Titans are slated to host Shelby County on Sept. 27 at Shelbyville Country Club.
