New business: Judith Burk, LCSW Counseling Services

-A A +A

Address: 544 Main St., Suite 3, Shelbyville.

Who we are: Judy Burk has been a licensed clinical social worker since 1975.  She worked as a counselor with Seven Counties Services and Jewish Hospital Shelbyville as a medical social worker and consultant before raising three children.  As the children entered school, she began working with the home care program at Multi-Purpose Community Action Agency. This led to a consultant position with a local dialysis center.  In 1988, the hospice program, which cares for dying patients and their families, opened in Shelby County.  She became their first social worker as the program expanded to Henry, Spencer and Trimble counties.  After 15 years of caring for patients, Burk became a clinical manager in Shelby, Oldham and Jefferson counties. For the past 3 years of her 24-year career with Hosparus, she devoted her time to the terminal patients and their families at the Hosparus Inpatient Unit. Even though she retired this year, she plans to occasionally work there.

What we do: Having guided individuals and families through many difficult situations, Burk is now wanting to offer these counseling services in Shelbyville.  She plans to open her private practice Jan. 1. She will offer counseling for folks through difficult times. She is also trained in a modality called EMDR, which is particularly beneficial to overcome traumas that do not seem to go away. Confidentiality is a highly assured ethical standard in her practice.

What we say:  “All of us have times during which we experience losses of loved ones, relationships, jobs and disappointments,” Burk said.

Other stuff:  Burk recently was awarded the 2012 Sr. Marilyn Spink Service Award from Hosparus for her dedication of 24 years to the care of terminal patients and their families.
