Who we are: January was National Radon Action Month, and one Shelbyville company was even more aware of than most people. Alpha Radon Services, LLC, owned by Kent & Carolyn Kile, is Shelby County's first Radon mitigation and measurement company.

What we do: Kile says that Radon is a chemically inert, naturally occurring radioactive gas. It has no smell, color or taste. It is produced from the natural decay of uranium, which is found in rocks and soil. It can also be found in water. Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., after cigarette smoking. It can be a dangerous, life-threatening issue, Kile said, and people should be aware of the Radon levels in their homes. Radon testing is required for new home purchases.

The Kiles started their business in the later part of 2009, offering Radon testing for homes and businesses. They also install various types of mitigation systems designed to safely reduce Radon gas in buildings.

Kent Kile received his EPA certification training last summer, and currently holds National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) certification for both Radon testing and Radon mitigation.

Testing for radon is simple. A standard short-term test takes 48-72 hours, and Alpha Radon Services has testing equipment available to give immediate results without sending parts away for laboratory results. Test kits are also available from most home improvement stores and the state health department.

What we say: "It is a definite need in this area," Kent Kile said. "We have a higher concentration of radium and uranium in our soil, which puts us in a 'Zone 1' area according to the EPA."

Serving Shelby and surrounding counties, Alpha Radon Services work closely with realtors, home inspectors and property owners to help educate people about the presence and dangers of Radon gas.

"I would definitely recommend testing your home, specifically if you and/or your family spend a good amount of time on the bottom level of your home," Kile said. "You can have radon issues even if you do not have a basement."
