Grove Hill Cemetery will once again play host to the county’s Memorial Day services.

The service is sponsored by Shelby County’s VFW Post 1179, and the speaker will be Sgt. Major Pat Copas, who works full-time for the Kentucky Army National Guard, where her husband, Richard, is also a Sergeant Major. They served in the aviation brigade with Col. Roger Green Jr., commander of the local VFW.

The service will take place 11 a.m. Monday at the cemetery.

Before the ceremony, there will be a presentation inside the chapel, starting at 9:30 a.m., to memorialize those veterans buried at Grove Hill.

Mike Harrod and Duanne B. Puckett, members of Friends of Grove Hill, are coordinating the event.

Green urges the community to attend the event, adding that Memorial Day gives people the opportunity not only to remember, but also to honor, service men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, and it’s our duty to keep their memory alive.

The VFW traditionally places flags on veteran’s graves at Grove Hill Cemetery on the Saturday before Memorial Day, as part of the holiday, and this year, that event will begin at 9 a.m. In the past, volunteers and Boy Scout troops have participated in this activity. The VFW will also be coordinating the placement of flags at Calvary Cemetery and Shelbyville No. 1 Cemetery.

There are more than 1,000 military veterans to be honored in this way at the cemetery. Participants will be meeting Saturday just inside the gate to the cemetery at its entrance on Mount Eden Road. For more information or to participate in the event contact Green at 502-633-6331.
