McDaniel, a staff writer with the Sentinel-News, wrote the book during his years at Butler University in Indianapolis earning a journalism degree. Fishing with Paps is “a mix, bits and pieces,” he said of people he knows. In the novel, Paps, Ethan’s grandfather, tells of his walk on the Bataan Death March in the Philippines during World War II and his love of the girl who would become Ethan’s grandmother. Ethan comes to resolve the mistakes of his own life through the appreciation of his grandfather’s life.
As McDaniel wrote Fishing with Paps, he decided to propose to his girlfriend Stephanie using the completed book. The proposal appeared in the dedication when the book was published. The two have since been married.
The book is published by AuthorHouse in Bloomington, Ind. and is available on amazon.com.
