A man whom Shelbyville Police said held a woman at gun and knife point for five days last week was arraigned Tuesday in Shelby District Court.

Gary Harris, 48, was arrested May 7 and charged with first-degree sodomy, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, fourth-degree assault and first-degree wanton endangerment.

The woman, his girlfriend, was rescued by patrolmen Tuesday after being held by Harris at the point of a 14-inch hunting knife and gunpoint on his home on Bland Avenue.

The report says that Harris had restrained the woman at his home for five days, during which time he sexually abused her by forcing objects into her body.

In the report, police say the woman told of being struck on the head with a hammer, being forced to sit in scalding hot water, and being held at both knife and gunpoint.

Shelbyville Assistant Police Chief Maj. Istvan Kovacs said that the police were made aware of the situation after someone called to tell them about the woman’s plight.

“A family member contacted us through central dispatch,” he said.

Kovacs said he could not be specific because of an ongoing investigation.

The report said that after Harris’ arrest, the woman was treated by a sexual assault nurse, and evidence gathered at the crime scene included photos, fingerprints and a rape kit.

Harris is lodged at the Shelby County Detention Center under a $27,500 cash bond.

All of the charges except for the fourth-degree assault are felonies.

First-degree sodomy carries a prison sentence of 10 to 20 years, and first-degree unlawful imprisonment has a penalty of 1 to 5 years, as does first-degree wanton endangerment.
