Arrested after victim fatally stabbed at Lynne Acres

A Shelbyville man has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of a Franklin County man on Friday night.

Melvin Hawkins, 35, of 102 Lynne Acres is accused of stabbing  Ricky Wright, 46, of 2127 Mink Run Road in Franklin County.

Shelby Police Major. D. Goodwin said the stabbing happened at the apartment building.

The police report said that Hawkins and Wright were involved in an altercation that was both oral and physical, when Hawkins picked up a knife and stabbed Wright in the chest. Goodwin said he is not sure whether  Wright was stabbed inside or outside the building, but that Wright began called for help from the parking lot.

“A neighbor heard him calling for help and called the police,” Goodwin said.

Wright was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Goodwin added that Hawkins was taken into custody at the scene at 10:30 p.m.  The police report said the motive behind the stabbing is unknown.

Hawkins is lodged at the Shelby County Detention Center under a $500,000 cash bond.
