Man arrested for allegedly hitting baby in the face

A Shelbyville man was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree criminal abuse of a child under 12 years old.

According to Shelbyville Police, Jose Lisandro Chavez Alas, 20, of 416 Sycamore Terrace allegedly struck his 6-month-old infant stepson in the face on Thursday, causing visible injury.

The police report said the child’s mother was witness to the incident.

Chavez, who is in the country illegally, also was served with an emergency protective order at the time of his arrest.

He is lodged at the Shelby County Detention Center under a $10,000 cash bond.

First-degree criminal abuse of a child under 12 is a Class C felony, punishable by 5 to 10 years in prison.
