Many of the usual suspects will be at or near the top of the region again this year. Simon Kenton is the early favorite, but several other teams will be waiting to knock them off.
The Lady Pioneers went 26-9 last season on the way to winning the 8th Region Tournament. They also return the region's top-rated player in 5-5 guard Chelsea Tolliver who averaged 17 points a game. However, the biggest return may be from 5-10 Lindsey Figgins who returns from a knee injury.
The Lady Bearcats were 24-9 last season, and took Simon Kenton to the wire in the region title game. The Lady Cats return a solid nucleus with vocal leader Tiffany Davenport and scoring leader Lindsay Fultz. SCHS Coach Sally Zimmerman said she believes Fultz is one of the top three players in the region "if not the best."
The Lady Rockets will look to rebound from an early exit in the first round of the region tournament last year after going 21-9.
"Our strengths are our quickness and our ability to be coached," Zimmerman said. "Our weaknesses are our lack of varsity experience and our lack of physical strength." The Lady Rockets will sorely miss point guard Raechele Gray, but a deep pool of guards will be the team's strength.
The Lady Colonels look to improve on a 15-15 campaign last year that ended with a first round loss to Walton Verona in the region tournament. The biggest new addition for Oldham this season is new coach Larry Just. Just has had success in the college ranks and comes from a coaching family. Audri Beudrie, a 5-6 guard who averaged 12 points last season, will be the key for Oldham.
The Lady Dragons lost the best player in school history when Lauren Jones graduated after last season. The Lady Dragons upset Shelby County in the first round of the region, but then lost to Simon Kenton in the semifinals. Jones will be the hardest to replace, but South also lost three other senior starters. Look for a big year from 5-7 junior guard Jordann McGuffin, the only returning starter.
