Championship teams

With all the excitement of the Collins Titans making their first trip to the state finals, history has become muddied in columnist Steve Doyle's review (“Collins has created a moment that will last a lifetime,” Nov. 28) of past participants in the Kentucky State Championship games. The first team from Shelby County in the finals was the 1976 Rockets, against Erlanger-Lloyd. The next year, the 1977 edition of the Rockets returned to a close loss to this year’s opposition, the Bluebirds from Highlands. The 1982 Rockets were in the State-At-Large finals game. The 1987 Rockets  brought home the big trophy  with a defeat of Boone County. The 1993 Rockets were back in the big game against the Male Bulldogs.

All of these five teams were in the big game because of the guidance and direction of Coach Tom Becherer, who is part of the Collins staff. The young men in the ballgame on Friday will have an opportunity to bring home another championship to a community that is of championship caliber. These young men have an accomplishment that they will come to cherish more as time goes on.  I congratulate them all, and thank the coaches for their guidance.

Poor driver

To the jerk who just tore down my electric fence: You must not be from around here, otherwise you would know the importance of closing a gate or fixing a fence so that the livestock don't get out in the road. I'm very grateful that my elderly Quarter Horse wasn't in the little paddock you just demolished. He would have either gotten hit by your vehicle or gotten out since you couldn't be bothered to fix the fence after you ran off the road.

I was in the barn when you had your little mishap and was walking out to check on you,

and make sure you were OK when you drove – or should I say 'snuck'? – right past me.

So, not only do you lack both common sense and any sense of responsibility, you're also a lousy driver, and it’s a shame that I, not you, am the one who has to deal with the consequences of that. If you're not going to stay off the road, then at least stay away from my property and my

animals.

Selfishness abounds

Oscar Wilde: "Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live."

Cyndi Young-Puyear: "Selfish people seem to think this is their world, the rest of us are just living in it."

Apply the words of these wise people where you will. For me, it seems there are more selfish people today than ever before.
