Coach Phillip Conder doesn’t make empty threats.

Although the Lady Rockets (12-14) were beating Frankfort, 28-12, at halftime Thursday, they had committed 12 turnovers. So with an eye toward postseason perfection, Conder issued a warning.

“We said if we didn’t start cutting these turnovers, they were going to have to run,” he said. “I hate to threaten them with running, but it seemed to work because we only had five in the second half.”

A few key pays sparked an 8-0 run as the Lady Rockets went on to win, 64-31, on senior night, their third victory in-a-row.

The Lady Rockets began the second half handling the ball better, but Frankfort (10-17) was able to pull to 10 points when Sheree Brown made a layup in transition. Shelby needed a spark to put the game away.

Taylor Shaw got it going with a 3-pointer, reminiscent of the Lady Rockets’ perimeter shooting to start the game --  Dee Dee Davis hit two of them and Leeara Cardwell added one before the Lady Panthers hit a bucket in the first quarter.

After Shaw’s three, Aaliyah Wells finished a three-point play to put Shelby up 39-22. With Frankfort still fighting for rebounds and pressing the Lady Rockets, Wells and fellow underclassman Cardwell made some plays into the fourth quarter that snapped any momentum by the Lady Panthers.

To open the fourth, Wells fought for an offensive rebound that sent her to the foul line. She knocked down both free throws, going 5-for-7 in the game.

When Frankfort answered with a scoop layup from Shauntae Brown, Cardwell slowed the offense, and the Lady Rockets passed around until Shaw had an open look underneath. Cardwell followed with another nice assist to Marissa Raisor following a defensive rebound.

“That’s our longest winning streak of the year. We did a good job tonight. We shot the ball extremely well,” Conder said. “I was glad to see my seniors get a win their last regular-season home game.”
