On senior night, it was two youngsters who provided the Lady Rockets with a 2-0 victory over visiting Sayre.
Freshman Shelby Vogel and sophomore Sarah Robinson scored about midway through the first half, giving Shelby County (9-5-2) the lead over the Lady Spartans (6-8-1).
SCHS Coach Joe Turner changed his lineup for the senior night celebration, playing all the older players the first 20 minutes, before bringing in the underclassmen.
“I thought we played pretty well in the first half,” he said. “We basically played two different teams, with older girls starting and the younger ones coming in.
“Even though it was a couple of younger girls that scored, I thought both sets played well throughout the first half.”
The Lady Rockets capitalized on two of their five shots in the first half, and Turner praised the team’s work.
“I thought we had some good crosses, good passing, good movement and good spacing in the first half,” he said.
The Lady Rockets used the same lineup in the second half, but Turner wasn’t nearly as pleased with the team’s work. However, he blamed himself, in part, for the second-half letdown.
“I guess when you sit for 20 or 25 minutes, it’s hard to get back into the flow of the game,” he said. “But I didn’t think we played very well in the second half, at all.”
One goal coming into the match, Turner said, was for the team to get loose and have more fun playing the game.
“We wanted them to come out and have fun, especially being senior night,” the coach said. “I think we play too tight sometimes. So the girls spent pretty much the whole day together, and they showed up loosey-goosey for the game. In fact, we thought they might come out a little too loose, but they didn’t. Hopefully we can carry that kind of attitude into the district tournament.”
The other key, Turner said, will be consistency.
“We need to put together a whole game,” he said. “Just like tonight [Tuesday], we played well for the first half, but not the second. If we can put a whole game together, I think we can play with anyone.”
The Lady Rockets open district play on Monday at 8 p.m. against Spencer County at North Oldham.
