Next week traffic may be backed up a bit on KY 55 at the I-64 interchange when roadwork is expected to intensify.
Officials at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet say that KY 55 will be reduced to one lane between I-64 and Breighton Boulevard beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday and, weather permitting, finishing at 7 p.m. Friday.
Andrea Clifford, spokesperson for the Transportation Cabinet, said the work will involve paving.
“Contract crews will be widening and paving KY 55 as part of the interchange improvements with the Interstate 64 widening project,” she said.
Clifford said that the contractor, Louisville Paving, will supply personnel to manually direct traffic through the work zone using flags.
She said this schedule is contingent upon the weather.
“The starting date and duration of work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur,” she said.
Forecasts for this area do not predict rain for that time period, but Clifford said if the contractor does happen to need more time to do the paving, she does not know if the work would extend into Mother’s Day weekend.
Clifford said she does not know the contractor’s schedule for the remainder of the construction to be done at the interchange.
“They still have more work to do,” she said. “They’re just paving that section of [KY] 55 south of the interstate next week, but there are still other things to be done, working on the exit ramp from eastbound [Interstate] 64 to KY 55, also working on the entrance ramp from [KY] 55 to eastbound 64.
“So there’s still more work to do on that side of the interchange. The work next week is just to pave the lanes on Kentucky 55 in that section between [Interstate] 64 and Breighton Boulevard.”
Next week’s construction, involving three-tenths of a mile, is part of the $37.5 million I-64 widening project awarded to Louisville Paving. The completion date for the construction is April 30, 2014.
