Shelbyville residents may have noticed new building signs and increased activity in the building on the corner of Midland Boulevard and Baker Drive. The familiar balloon logo of Kosair Children’s Hospital Medical Associates adorns the red-brick building and street signs and lets everyone know that Shelby County is now home to a KCH-affiliated practice.
“There are more than thirteen hundred kids from Shelby County who seek care at Kosair Children’s Hospital and Kosair Children’s Medical Center – Brownsboro,” said Joshua Honaker, M.D., system vice president, Norton Medical Group. “By having a group of pediatricians affiliated with Kosair Children’s Hospital, we can extend this ‘Just for Kids’ care to Shelbyville. It’s a win for the community.”
To pursue this goal, an established local pediatric practice has merged with a company that has a strong legacy in children’s medical care.
For 13 years, Drs. Angelito L. Samson, Arlyn Lua-Canby and Lisa B. Lyon, have practiced medicine in Shelbyville as Pediatric and Neonatal Practice. They chose this fall to affiliate their practice with Kosair Children’s Hospital Medical Associates and have relocated their offices from a suite on Hospital Drive to a new facility at 213 Midland Boulevard.
“This affiliation has been an advantage for our patients and for our staff,” Dr. Samson said. “The administrative burden of running a medical office is lifted off our shoulders. We can devote ourselves to our chosen careers of doctoring. We focus on patients and on our delivery of care.”
“We are able to offer the Norton quality of care to the population of Shelby County.”
Certain advantages come with an affiliation with Norton Healthcare, which owns and operates the Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville. “Norton is a big family,” Samson said. “We now have access to their technology and records; the patient and family have a say in the management of their healthcare. The doctor-patient relationship can be more mutual as parents access their child’s electronic immunization records, schedule appointments and follow-up care, and find health tips.
“Norton also helps us with training and supporting our staff and front desk personnel. Dawn Carter, our practice manager, has been to visit other KCHMA practices to observe how they run. She has access to training in how to best manage our office.”
Said Judy Maxwell, director of Norton Medical Group: “Norton Healthcare and Kosair Children’s Hospital are excited to have this new presence in Shelby County. This practice has exceptional pediatricians, and we’re thrilled to have them as part of our Medical Associates team.”
“As the only hospital in this area focusing solely on children’s medical care, the Kosair Children’s Hospital brand is appealing to many parents and families.”
In 2012, there were 206 in-patient admissions to KCH from Shelby County, and 1,166 outpatient visits by Shelby County children. “A lot of kids from Shelby County come to our Kosair Children’s Hospital facilities in Louisville. By locating a Kosair Children’s Medical Associates office in Shelbyville, we give children local access to our services,” said Maggie Roetker, director of public relations with Norton Healthcare. “It’s about the kids.”
The new office space in Shelbyville is bright, open and kid-friendly. “I think the new office looks great!” Dr. Samson said. “I think the community will enjoy this new space and will benefit greatly from the joint venture we’ve entered into with KCH.
“Our patients followed us from our old offices to our new location. The transition is going well.”
In addition, the new office has received at least 50 calls from new families seeking to be seen by a KCH affiliated pediatrician. The practice is accepting new patients.
New hospital and practice affiliations have brought abundant medical services to Shelby County in recent years. Jewish Hospital Shelbyville affiliated with KentuckyOne Health, adding new physicians and medical practices. KentuckyOne also has merged with practices around town. Baptist East also has an affiliation with an obstetric/gynecology practice.
