Kentucky State Police announced Tuesday that in order to enhance its ability to provide effective law enforcement services to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the state legislature has authorized the re-employment of retired troopers on a contractual basis.

House Bill 410, passed on June 25, 2009, created the position of Trooper R Class, which is defined as a Kentucky State Police officer, who retired from service as a commissioned officer under KRS Chapter 16, and is re-employed under KRS 16.196 - 16.199. Troopers falling under this classification are employed on a contractual basis and are vested with the powers and duties of any peace officer commissioned under KRS Chapter 16.

To be employed as a Trooper R Class, a Chapter 16 retiree must have retired as a member of the State Police Retirement System with at least 20 years of service credit; have been separated from service for a period of no less than one month and no more than 60 months; have retired willingly with no administrative charges pending and have retired with no pre-existing agreement with the Kentucky State Police to return to work for the department.

The salary for a Trooper R Class employee is $3,115.20 monthly ($37,382.40 annually). Any increments set by legislative approval will reflect in the designated salary. Troopers receive an allowance of $5.00 per day for uniform maintenance and a $3,100 annual training stipend.

"The Kentucky State Police is the leading law enforcement agency for the Commonwealth of Kentucky," KSP Commissioner Rodney Brewer said. "Becoming a Trooper for the second time is much more than just a job, it is a second opportunity to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth with the same traditions of honor, courage and commitment that have made the agency great for more than 60 years."

The deadline for applying for the first round of hiring is Oct. 31, 2009. For more information, contact Sgt. Harvey Baxter, KSP Recruitment Branch, 1-866-360-3165.
