Shelby girls, Collins boys advance to state

By Josh Cook

BUCKNER -- Collins junior Caterina Karas broke out early and never looked back in winning the Class AA, Region 3 meet Saturday afternoon at Oldham County High School.

Karas covered the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 37.45 to beat defending AA state champ Jenna Rogers of Christian Academy of Louisville.

“I just wanted to get out and keep the lead the whole way,” Karas said. “I felt good, more confident that way.”

Karas, as well as the Shelby County girls’ team, led by sophomore Taylor Webb, and the Collins boys’ team, led by junior Thomas Smith, qualified for next Saturday’s State Meet at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

Webb finished fourth overall in 19:23.82 to lead the Rockets, who finished fifth in the team standings. Top-ranked, and two-time defending state champ, South Oldham won the meet with 29 points. Collins finished sixth, five points behind the Rockets.

Meanwhile Smith finished sixth overall in 17:06.36 to lead the Titans’ boys, who finished third in the team standings. South Oldham, the 2009 state champion, won the team title with 40 points, while North Oldham finished second with 53, while the Titans totaled 73. North Oldham’s Taylor Sanders won the boys’ race in 16:13.71.
