First Lady Jane Beshear will speak at the 13th annual Jubilee Kickoff Breakfast on Thursday at Undulata Farm, marking the beginning of the Jubilee celebrations leading up to the Shelbyville Horse Show, which opens July 29.

Shelby Development Corporation Director Eilene Collins said Beshear may speak about her experience as the state's First Lady or about one of her favorite charities, Horses for Hope. That organization, celebrating its 10th year in 2009, provides horse adventures for children with cancer and their families. Owner Edward “Hoppy” Bennett puts a Saddlebred through its paces as guests watch.

Two events that were new last year proved popular, and they will be on again this year: the custom car cruise and the Saddlebred duck race.

Main Street will be closed from 4th to 7th streets on July 25 to allow car buffs to show off their custom and historic cars downtown.

The street will be closed to through traffic from 6 to 10 p.m. Shelbyville Merchants Association for Retail Trade sponsors the custom car cruise. For more information, call Donnie Reed at 834-7894.

The Saddlebred duck race takes place at Red Orchard Park on July 24 at 11 a.m. Local firefighters will launch weighted and numbered ducks that will float down the creek. Ducks can be reserved for $3 for one duck or $5 for two ducks. The first ducks across the finish line earn prizes.

To reserve a duck, call the development corporation at 633-5029.

New this year will be a historic downtown walking tour provided by Historic District Commissioner Gail Reed. Anyone interested in the tour can call Reed at 844-2277.

The Hometown Vacation Friday on July 24 will be held in the parking lot of 627 Main St. Phil Kelley will perform.

The Street Party Concert on Saturday night will feature Leo and the Moonlighters.

The concert is held at 5th and Main streets, and $1,000 in downtown gift certificates will be awarded.

The Shelby Development Corporation also will sponsor youth art contests and sidewalk chalk art contests during Jubilee.
