This year’s annual Health and Fitness Fun Day at the Family Activity Center promises to be fun for all.
The event, which is 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, will include a family community health fair with information on several health-related topics, and free pedometers will be given out to the first 100 participants.
Rachelle Sharar, administrative assistant at the Shelby County Extension Office, which has been in charge of the event for the past 10 years, said they hope to entice people to come out and show them how to get active.
The event, she said, kicks off the University of Kentucky’s “Get Moving Kentucky!” program, something that UK encourages its agencies throughout the state to promote.
“It’s a big push for all our extension offices,” she said. “You have to exercise three times a week and log your activities and then bring that back to us and you get a free T-shirt,” she said. “That’s why we’re giving out the free pedometers, so you can check your progress.”
The program lasts for six weeks, she said.
Other features will include activities for adults and children activities, door prizes and bicycle giveaways for toddlers, youth and adults.
Sharar said there will be 33 booths set up in the gym at the FAC and that some “regulars” will be back again this year, such as A Loving Choice Pregnancy Center, Centro Latino and Hodgson Mill.
Cinda Lewis with the Loving Choice Pregnancy Center, said the organization has had a presence at the event for the past three years.
“We will have a table set up; we always have a good response,” she said.
Carol Stine of Simpsonville, a food developer for Hodgson Mill, a Chicago company that specializes in glutten-free products, has been participating in the event since it started, she said.
“That first year, I was hooked,” she said, laughing. “We have converted a lot of people.”
Stine said she and her husband, Phil, will have two tables at the event, which will contain catalogs and samples of glutten-free products, such as apple and carrot muffins.
“People are always trying to eat healthier and this is a delicious way to help them do that,” she said.
