Griffin tied for 28th after 1st round of State Am

Shelbyville’s Tayler Adams and Josh Griffin teed off Tuesday in the first round of the 2013 Kentucky Amateur Championship golf tournament at the Bowling Green Country Club.

Griffin shot a 2-over-par 74, to tie for 28th-place, while Adams fired a 4-over 78 to tie for 92nd. Griffin will tee off at 9:38 a.m. from hole No. 1 today, while Adams will tee off from No. 10 at 9:39 a.m. today.

Clay Hinton had the first-round lead with a 6-under 66, while two-time defending champ Patrick Newcomb was second at 5-under.


SOCCER: Rovers fall to Fire

The Chicago Fire defeated the River City Rovers, the Premier Development League men’s soccer team that is playing its home matches in Shelbyville this summer, 3-1 Friday night at the Shelby County Athletic Complex.

Joey Calistri gave the Fire the early lead with a goal in the fifth minute before teammate Brian Ciesiulka added another 4 minutes later.  

In the 39th minute the Fire made it 3-0 on Christopher Prince’s goal.

The Rovers had a chance to cut into Chicago’s lead in the 48th minute, but Lwandiso “Ace” Gonya’s shot hit the right post.

River City finally broke through in the 74th minute, when Pierce Kiembi headed in a corner kick from Lepe Seetane.

The Rovers (3-4-1) play at Chicago (2-5) at 2 p.m. today before returning home to host the Michigan Bucks (5-1), who are tied for the lead in the Great Lakes Division along with Forest City London, at 7 p.m. Saturday at SCAC.
