Brandenburg, SCHS shows gains from ‘12

By Josh Cook

The Collins and Shelby County boys’ golf teams both had solid showings Saturday at Anderson County’s Bearcat Classic, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, at Wild Turkey Trace in Lawrenceburg.

Anderson County’s Red squad captured the team title with 301, four shots ahead of Franklin County. Collins carded 313 and Shelby County 328.

Anderson County’s Lee Robinson earned medalist honors, beating Butler’s Chase Wathen on the second playoff hole after both finished with 70s.

Titans senior Brandon Sanner finished sixth overall, shooting 73 after missing the season-opening Flyer Classic (where Collins finished fifth) because he was playing in an American Junior Golf Association event in Ocala, Fla. (Sanner finished 55th in the AJGA Junior.)

Sanner’s classmates, Michael Troutman and Michael Atkins, added 77 and 79, respectively, and fellow seniors Chandler White and Matthew Feltner rounded out Collins’ scoring with 84s.

Meanwhile the Rockets, playing their first invitational of the season, finished 15 shots behind their cross-town rivals.

“I was happy with our performance when you consider last season our best tournament score was a three fifty-seven, so in that aspect we have come a very long way,” Shelby County Coach Matt Redmon said.

Junior Tanner Brandenburg led the Rockets with 77, and senior Isaac Martin and junior Dakota Baatz carded 79s.

“This is the first time since I took the coaching position that we’ve had three players shoot in the seventies,” Redmon said. “Dakota, Tanner and Isaac have put in a large amount of work, and it shows. However, I know, and the guys know, that this was not our best day.”

Senior Jimmy Hulce rounded out Shelby County’s team score with 93.

“We missed some opportunities around the green to score, and it took us out of contention to place in the top three,” Redmon said. “However, I would like to commend Tanner Brandenburg for putting up a personal-best seventy-seven on a course that was set up for tournament play on a very wet, rainy day.”
