Collins girls’ soccer team played to a 1-all draw against Mercer County in its first scrimmage of the season Monday at Clear Creek Park.
The Titans, a team with just three upperclassmen, took advantage early of their speed by maintaining solid possession and mounting quick attacks and counterattacks. In the 12th minute, Titan Brook Whitehead dribbled up the right sideline and to the edge of the 18-yard box. She got a shot off just before the Mercer defender closed in. The keeper got a hand on Whitehead’s shot but just deflected it hard to the front of the 6-yard box, where Titan Lindsey Ketcham was following up. Ketcham placed it past the keeper for to give Collins a 1-0 lead.
“I was really pleased with the way the kids played,” Collins Coach Terry Murphy said. “I thought they did the triangle passing well. In the second half, the other team adjusted to us, gave us a little more space.”
The Titans’ defense had done a good job though the first half of not allowing many open shots on goalkeeper Maria Metcalf. Metcalf stopped an early breakaway, though the colliding Mercer forward jostled her braced knee and left Metcalf limping for a minute. She shook it off and continued making saves. Until Mercer snuck one in on a corner kick in the second half to tie the game.
Collins will scrimmage Frankfort Saturday in the Heart of Kentucky Soccerama before opening the regular season Monday at North Oldham.
