Getting down to Motown

-A A +A
By Scotty McDaniel

SCHS Black Achievers celebrated fashion, music and dance at the 4th Annual Fashion Extravaganza Saturday night in the school's theater. They showed their style by dancing, singing and modeling to the hits of The Supremes and Stevie Wonder, among others - with the theme of "Motown Revue."

Karen Henderson, SCHS counselor and club sponsor, said SCHS Black Achievers is loosely based on Louisville's YMCA Black Achievers. It is open to all high school students and promotes academic success.

"Our premise is to promote academic achievement and post-secondary opportunities among students, particularly African-American students," Henderson said. "This is our 4th year doing the Fashion Extravaganza and all proceeds go toward academic activities such as field trips to universities and colleges, and our senior book stipend award."

The group also works to award money for expenses to those students who will go on to a college or university.

"Our next activity will be a retreat, which will focus on issues and barriers that impede academic success," she said.

Other club sponsors are Albert Jordan and Vivian Overall.
