The Collins boys’ soccer team got its hands on some hardware Thursday night.
And the Titans hope this wasn’t the last trophy they get this postseason.
They controlled nearly every minute of the match in claiming their first district title with a 3-0 victory over Anderson County in the 30th District Tournament final.
Jack Oakey, Caleb Vogel and Zack Miller each scored goals for fifth-ranked Collins (16-1-2), which was the district runner-up last year.
“We’ve come close before, so it feels good to finally win it,” Vogel, a junior defender who also assisted Miller’s goal, said. “But we hope we can go a lot farther and hopefully win a state championship.”
The Titans beat Owen County, 4-0, Monday night in the first round of the 8th Region Tournament. They played South Oldham in Tuesday night's region semifinals.
Collins beat Anderson County, 2-1, in overtime in Lawrenceburg on Aug. 18, but the rematch wasn’t as close.
Playing on their larger pitch, the Titans took advantage with Oakey’s early goal.
“We had them spread out and Jack found an opening and put it right where he needed to,” Collins Coach Scott Cress said.
The Titans added to their lead with less than a minute remaining in the first half. That’s when the Bearcats (10-10) were whistled for a foul about 15 yards outside of the goal box. With the clock ticking down midfielder Austin Lanham started to take the ensuing free kick, but Cress called him off and told him to wait for the strong-footed Shuck to run up from defense.
Shuck’s blast bounced hard off the chest of Anderson’s goalie and right to Vogel, who booted it in for the rebound goal with 23 seconds to play.
“Chris Shuck had a really hard shot, the keeper couldn’t catch it and it just bounced out to me,” Vogel said. “I just tried not to shoot it over [the goal], but I almost did.”
It was the third goal in two matches for the 6-foot-5 Vogel, whose specialty is scoring on set pieces (he tallied off a free kick and a corner kick in the district semifinals against Spencer County).
“We’ve got guys like Caleb Vogel and Chris Shuck, they bigger and taller than a lot of the guys on most teams we play, that’s why on set pieces we’re so hard to defend,” Cress aid.
Collins added to its lead in the fourth minute of the second half when Vogel took a pass from Oakey, then crossed the ball to Miller, who put it into the back of the net for his team-best 14th goal of the season.
