Susanne Burkhardt was quite emotional the first day of school. It was not because of something wrong at Southside Elementary, where she is principal. It was because a former student stopped by to share a note of appreciation for her influence as his teacher when he was in the third grade at Southside. Leland Ratcliffe graduated magna cum laude from Collins High School in 2011 and was headed to University of Louisville on Aug. 17 when he took time to share his past memories and his future dreams with Burkhardt, who is seen reading his note.
