Essay contest winner

“I’m writing about my Papa because he is my inspiration. When I see my Papa, I smile just like when he sees me, he smiles...” That is how Livia Thompson began an essay she wrote as part of the AARP/Kentucky Retired Teachers Association Grandparent of the Year contest. The fifth-grader at Painted Stone Elementary won the Shelby County contest and the 5th District contest. She read her essay at the Shelby County Retired Teachers Association banquet June 9 when she was also presented awards.
