EMS students 2nd in competition

A team of middle school “mathletes” from Shelby East Middle School took second place at the KSPE Capital Chapter MathCounts competition last weekend.

The top individual was Wesley Wei from Boyle County Middle School. Nick Fluty, also from Boyle County Middle School and Emma Saarinen from Shelby East Middle School placed second and third, respectively.

For the first time in MathCounts’ 28-year history, Western Kentucky University awarded scholarships to the top three scoring individuals. Wesley Wei won a 4-year, full-tuition scholarship to WKU and Nick and Emma won 4-year awards of $1,000 and $500, respectively.

EMS team members are Emma Saarinen, Luke Brown, Nolan Hughes and Jeron Russell. Donna Whitis is the coach.

The team will now advance to the state competition on March 31 in Louisville.

The first and third place teams are from Boyle County Middle School and Scott County Middle School, respectively.
