EARLIER: We congratulate: The county's plans for 7th Street sidewalks

We like what we hear about the county’s plans – joining the city’s earlier discussions – to improve the sidewalk corridor along 7th Street and Burks Branch Road toward Clear Creek Park.

We have advocated the concept that this pathway should become much smoother for walkers, runners and stroller-pushers.

The insipid and unsightly cracks, overgrown weeds and otherwise narrow stretches of  concrete have been in need of repair for years, but with the hope of connecting the downtown core to the park, improving the mobility of citizens and encouraging a more lively lifestyle, improvement has become necessary.

Shelby County needs as many smooth passages as possible to promote a healthier lifestyle, and this is an obvious and simple place to start.

We recognize the county has a complex and perhaps expensive project to embrace, but we are encouraged by what we hear and return that encouragement to decision-makers.

Let’s make 7th Street a “boulevard” to the park and create a north side of Shelbyville that matches the concepts in place for the East End.

For the sake of a healthy future for our largest city and its residents, we simply can’t move quickly enough.
