A Shelby County man was killed Thursday when he crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer, police say.

A Kentucky State Police report said that Robert Hite III, 58, of Shelbyville, was killed in the accident that happened at about 3 p.m. in Franklin County.

Police say Hite was traveling eastbound on Interstate 64, when he came upon an accident at about the 48-mile marker.

A tractor-trailer in front of him, driven by Early Woods, 50, of Harrisburg, Va., had slowed because of the accident. Hite apparently did not notice that Woods had slowed, the report said.

Hite rammed into the back of Woods' 2007 Freightliner TT, which caused his 2006 Mercury to overturn, coming to final rest on the left shoulder of the roadway.

The Freightliner came to rest on the right side of the road.

Hite was pronounced dead by the Franklin County Coroner at 3:40 p.m.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. There were no passengers listed on the report for either driver.

The accident is being investigated by KSP. Funeral arrangements for Hite are pending.
