NEW CASTLE  - In spite of an incredible comeback the Collins boys’ basketball team’s season – one with regional championship hopes – came to an abrupt end Tuesday evening.

Hot-shooting South Oldham knocked off the Titans 85-82 in overtime in the first round of the 8th Region Tournament at Henry County High School.

The Titans rallied from a 21-point deficit in the fourth quarter to send the game into an extra session, however, the Dragons outscored Collins 15-12 in the final 4-minute frame.

“Our guys didn’t want to see their season end,” Titans Coach Chris Gaither said. “That shows the fight, that shows the character of our team.”

Collins senior guard Buddy Johnson, who scored a game-high 34 points, sent the game into overtime with an improbable put-back of Ralphie Stone’s purposely missed free throw with five-tenths of a second remaining in regulation.

However Matthew Haysley’s conventional 3-point play 59 seconds into the extra session gave South Oldham a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Haysley tallied 12 of his team-high 27 points in overtime for the Dragons (22-7).

“I thought we had the energy and momentum going into the overtime, but then two possessions in the momentum was back to them,” Gaither said. “That’s basketball.”

The Titans (21-8) had a chance to tie the game on their final possession but Johnson – who hit nine 3-pointers – was under heavy duress from the Dragons.

Collins senior forward Dez Marshall, the 8th Region Player of the Year, scored 17 points and snared 12 rebounds for the Titans, who shot 46.4 percent (26 for 56) from the field – including 52.2 percent (12 of 23) from 3-point range. Sophomore point guard Brent Kidwell added 11 points and six assists for Collins, which trailed 39-24 at halftime.

On the flip side South Oldham shot 56.9 percent (29 of 51), including 65.4 percent (17 for 26) as it was building its 15-point intermission cushion.

“They did a great job of breaking us down off the dribble and kicking it out for threes,” Gaither said. “Hats off to them.”
