The monthly Downtown Concert Series returns to the Veterans Park in Shelbyville on Saturday – but with a slight twist this year.
The concerts only will be held on Saturday nights, but they will feature the same music, food, prize drawings and other events that have been staples of these popular events in the past.
Eilene Collins, executive director of Shelby Development Corporation, which organizes and sponsors the series, said the elimination of the Friday night concerts, which were held at the public parking lot in the 600 block of Main Street, was simply about low traffic.
“[It was] primarily the attendance at the Friday night venue and fatigue of faithful
Presbyterians who cooked,” she said. “The Friday night concert will be held on July 26
at 627 Main.”
She said she hopes the Presbyterians will continue to cook for the events on Saturday, which are at 7 p.m. at the corner of 5th and Main Streets. Opening night features Ralph Curtis and his All-American Band.
Shelby County Magistrate Hubert Pollett has for years sponsored the musical acts for the events, and he’s the person who chooses and schedules them.
“Hubie Pollett and I sit down with calendars to attempt to avoid conflicts with the county fair, high school proms, etc.” Collins said. “Mr. Pollett selects the musicians.”
This year’s lineup features some perennial performers, including New Breed, Hard Rock City and Shelbyville native Will Husband.
The concerts also will be part of the Shelbyville Horse Show Jubilee on July 26-27, and they will join with the Shelby County Car Club to have cruises of vintage vehicles on Main Street on July 27 and Sept. 7.
Collins said sponsorships are in place for all nights.
“We have a larger than usual number of one-half sponsors this year,” she said. “All of the events have sponsors at this time.”
The drawings for downtown gift certificates will be held again: at 8 p.m., $200; at 9 p.m., $300; and at 10 p.m., $500.
