If your holiday travel Monday requires a trek along Interstate 64 in western Shelby County, you'd better leave a little early.
The state Transportation Cabinet announced Friday afternoon that crews on Monday would begin restriping the pavement in the I-64 work zone where roadway widening is under way between Simpsonville and Exit 32 in Shelbyville.
This work will improve the visibility of the lane markings during construction.
To accommodate this work, crews will need to use rolling road blocks that will slow and possibly stop traffic at intervals throughout the day. Traffic on both eastbound and westbound I-64 will be affected between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Transportation officials said the rain during the weekend and the cold temperatures overnight limited the options to complete what they believe is an essential safety element, especially with the road packed with holiday travelers.
The actual starting date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Dial 511 or log on to 511.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
