Shelby County retired teachers meeting
The Shelby County Retired Teachers Association meets at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Stratton Center. The speaker for the program will be James Neihof, superintendent of the Shelby County Public Schools, who will update us on things that are happening in the school district and will answer questions from the audience. Reservations are not necessary, and a dessert and drink will be served compliments of the retired teachers. There is no charge and the meeting is open to the public. Driver safety program
AARP Driver Safety Program will be 1-5 p.m. Thursday and Nov. 28 at the Shelby County Extension Office. Drivers ages 55 and older can choose to attend either day.  Participants will learn how to adjust their driving to age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. There are no tests and no behind the wheel driving. Check with your auto insurance to find out the reduction in costs you will receive by completing this class. The class is free to all veterans and their spouses during the month of November. For other drivers the cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. Chili cook-off at Clay Street Baptist
The Marnel C. Moorman Sr. Family Life Center will host a chili cook-off 6-8:30 p.m. Friday. Enter at the Clay Street Baptist Church entrance on Midland Trail in Shelbyville. The cost will be $5 for adults and $3 for children who are 4 to 12 years old. Proceeds will go to support youth basketball sponsorships.
Eastern Star
Shelby Chapter 170 Order of the Eastern Star meets at Solomon Lodge at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Benefit for April Sweet
A benefit will be Friday at Fusion Bar & Grill at the Tractor Supply Shopping Center for April Sweet, who is being treated for cancer and has many medical bills. Her friends and co-workers at Amcor in Shelbyville will have an individual pool tournament that begins at 6:30 p.m., with entries by 5 p.m.  At 6 p.m. a Calcutta will take place. The winner of the pool tournament will receive 25 percent of the buy-ins at a donation of $20 per person. The Calcutta winner will receive 25 percent of all funds raised. There is a $5 door charge.  From 7-10 p.m. DJ Kentucky Karaoke will be onsite providing music and then at 10 p.m. the karaoke contest will begin for a $3 donation per entry.
Kids Korner
Centenary United Methodist Church hosts Kids Korner at 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday for K-fifth grade children who are on the free/reduced meals program. The children enter the facility from the 5th-and- Washington Street door and are given an opportunity to share in games, crafts, stories and fellowship before enjoying a hot meal and being sent home with a take-home-snack-sack. There will be special activities for parents. For those who do not have transportation, call 633-4510 by noon Friday.
Light Up Simpsonville
The annual holiday lighting/chili supper will be held Saturday in front of the Simpsonville Community Center. The lighting ceremony will begin at 6:05 p.m., and the dinner will be available at 6:15. There will be other activities as well.
Holiday bazaar

Turkey Trot road race
Leadership Shelby will sponsor the sixth annual Turkey Trot on Saturday at 6th and Main streets in Shelbyville. Packet pickup and registration will be 7:30-8:15 a.m. The race will begin at 8:30 a.m. Entry fee is $20 if received before Nov. 8 or $25 afterwards and on race day. Christmas craft/gift show

Bird feeders workshop

Scouting for food
Boy Scouts will be in neighborhoods starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday to collect non-perishable food items. Food collected will help local food pantries feed the hungry. Food can also be dropped off at any Kroger store. No glass containers.

Christmas in Mount Eden
The annual Christmas celebration in Mount Eden will be 5-8 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Mount Eden Ruritan Club. The event will include chili, homemade pies, gospel singing, trolley rides, a visit from Santa and of course the county’s largest snowman.
Christmas parade
The Shelby County Christmas parade will be 10 a.m. Dec. 3, with a theme of “An American Red, White and Blue Christmas.” In honor of the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, the theme pays tribute to everyone who has dedicated themselves to our country in the past and present. Gary Tapp will be the grand marshal. Floats will be judged for best demonstration of the theme in the categories of Government/Government Entity, Business/Industry, Churches/Schools, and Civic Groups.  Shelby County Judge-Executive Rob Rothenburger will present the Shelby County Government Award, Mayor Tom Hardesty will present the City of Shelbyville Award. The Grand Champion Overall Award will be judged from the winners of all categories combined. To enter a unit in the parade, call Shelby County fire department, 633-6648. There is no fee to enter the parade.
Jingle Bell Ball at Cornerstone
The Jingle Bell Ball will be 6 p.m. Dec. 3 at Cornerstone Christian Academy, 3850 Frankfort Road. Events include dinner, dancing and live and silent auctions. Shaker Village illuminated

Shaker Village will kick off the holiday season with an evening of grand illumination 4-8:30 p.m. on Dec. 3. At dusk, the grand buildings along the village road will be illuminated by the twinkling of hundreds of candles. Admission is $10 per car (personal vehicle) with a canned-good donation, and $20 per extended van/mini bus with less than 20 people. Groups of more than 20 can call 800-734-5611 x1545 for pricing.
Toys for Tots ‘Stuff the Truck’

Shelby County High School MCJROTC cadets will be collecting toys for Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” Foundation 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Dec. 3 at the Shelbyville Walmart.
Lighting of Ashland

Ashland, the Henry Clay Estate in Lexington, will illuminate a 100-year-old, 100-foot- tall tree on the lawn on Dec. 4. The Norway Spruce, featuring 48,000 twinkling lights, is the country's largest living tree. The lighting ceremony, holiday music and sing along begins at 5 p.m. This event is free. Following the tree lighting, 5:30-8:30 pm., tour the 18-room mansion decked out in holiday splendor from bygone eras. The Candlelight Open House features decorations from the Dickens Era, live music and refreshments. The Holiday Open House is also available from 5:30-8:30 p.m. until Dec. 26. VFW Christmas dinner
The Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a Christmas dinner at 6 p.m. Dec. 5 at the post on Main Street. All veterans and their families are invited to bring a dish and participate.
Basketball/cheerleading registration
The Marnel C. Moorman Sr. Family Life Center youth basketball and cheerleading registration will be through Dec. 3 for ages 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14 for basketball, and ages 6-8, 9-11 for cheerleaders. The cost is $45 per person, and the first practices are after Dec. 5. The first game is scheduled for Jan. 7.
San-N-Tone horse show series
The San-N-Tone horse show series for 2011-12 will be 9 a.m. Dec. 4, Jan. 8, Feb. 5 and March 4 at the Shelby County Fairgrounds (indoor arena). Festival of Trees at Amber Oaks

Amber Oaks Assisted Living in Shelbyville will host its fourth annual Festival of Trees on Dec. 5-8. The festival will feature a public display of many one-of-a-kind, uniquely decorated trees and wreaths. Many of the themed trees and wreaths will be donated for silent auction, with all the proceeds going to local charities. A silent auction and festival Christmas party will be 4-6 p.m. Dec. 8.

Girl Scout Troop 1244 will host Spaghetti with Santa 5-8 p.m. on Dec. 9 at First Christian Church, 1000 Eminence Pike. Christmas with the Monarchs
Corpus Christi Academy will host its fifth annual Spirit of Christmas Dance, featuring the Monarchs and a $3,000 raffle, on Dec.10 at the Shelbyville Country Club lodge. Doors will open at 8:15 p.m., and dancing will be 9 p.m. to midnight. A full cash bar and complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be available. Tickets are $50 per couple or $30 for singles. Project Graduation meeting

The FAC Challenge’ boot camp
The Challenge Boot camp is an 8-week fitness challenge to lose weight, inches and body fat while participating in a two-month intense fitness boot camp. The 16-class camp is through Dec. 13. The person who loses the most body fat at the end of the camp will receive a free two-month boot camp package and the person who loses the most weight will receive a free 3-month membership at the FAC. Relay for Life kickoff

The Shelbyville Department of Public Works will offer bagged leaf pick-up within the city limits today through Dec. 30. Leaves must be bagged in strong garbage bags and tied with a 50-pound weight capacity. They should be placed on the curb, not blocking the sidewalk or street. Free tutoring
The Painted Stone Family Resource Center will offer free after-school tutoring. Two certified teachers will provide the tutoring to students from Painted Stone in grades K-5 3:30-5 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at Crescent Place Assisted Living Community, 148 Allen Drive, Shelbyville (off Midland Trail near Hardee’s).
Story hour at the library

These programs fill up fast so don’t delay. The schedule will be 10-10:30 a.m. for birth to 2-year-olds, Baby Time with Elaine; 11-11:35 a.m. for ages 2 to 6-year-olds, story time with Elaine, no registration required; teen and ‘tween programming with Sherry Bogard on Tuesdays. Wednesdays’ schedule with Bogard is Toddler Time, 10-10:35 a.m., 11-11:35 a.m. and 1:30-2:15 p.m. for ages 2 to 3-year-olds; and Afterschool, 4-4:45 p.m., for kindergarten through fifth grade. On Thursday will be Baby Time, 9:30-10 a.m. and 10:30-11 a.m., for ages birth to 2-year-olds, and Preschool, 1:30-2:15 p.m. for 4- to 5-year-olds.
Outdoor Center open Saturdays

Foster care/adoption program
The Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) is forming classes for their foster care and adoption program. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, married or single, financially stable and have an income, in good physical and mental health, meet safety requirements including background checks, and all adults in the home must successfully complete 32 hours of training. CHFS is in specific need of foster/adoptive homes willing to accept teenagers, large sibling groups (three or more), medically fragile kids, kids of a different race/ethnicity and kids currently available for adoption on the Special Needs Adoption Web site. Feed the Hungry
Help feed a hungry family by participating in the National Feed the Hungry Program. The Shelbyville Walmart is supporting Operation Care’s food pantry by being the designated drop off center for non-perishable items. Items most needed are crackers, peanut butter, cereal, oatmeal, juices, Kool-Aid, canned meats, powered milk, sugar, pasta and sauce, Hamburger Helper and canned fruits. Drug/alcohol recovery
Celebrate Recovery is a Christian-based Drug and Alcohol Recovery at the First Baptist Church, across from the Shelby Co. Fairgrounds. It is also for anyone who has a hurt, habit or hang-up.
