Fundraiser yard sale
A fundraiser/yard sale is 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 26 at 3373 Mount Eden Road to raise money to send Savannah Sanders, 21, of Shelbyville, who suffers from a brain injury, to a stem cell rejuvenation center in Arizona. She is blind and does not have the use of her left arm and foot. To make donations for the yard sale or fund-raiser contact Ashley at 502-220-2260. All benefits will go to pay for the procedure. Gathering of Authors
The Paul Sawyier Public Library will host A Gathering of Authors at 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Aug. 27. In its fourth year, the gathering is a celebration of the rich tradition of literature in Kentucky. Kids Korner
Centenary United Methodist Church hosts Kids Korner at 10 a.m.-noon Aug. 27 for K-fifth grade children who are on the free/reduced meals program. The children enter the facility from the 5th-and- Washington Street door and are given an opportunity to share in games, crafts, stories and fellowship before enjoying a hot meal and being sent home with a take-home-snack-sack. The Casey/Carpenter Reunion will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in the fellowship hall at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, on KY 53 in Shelby County. Anyone with a Casey or Carpenter connection is invited. Zumba for diabetes
Clear Creek FAC will host a Zumba day 4:30 p.m. Aug. 28 to help find a cure for juvenile diabetes. Entry fee is $10, and each person entered will be entered in a drawing. Smoking cessation program
Jewish Hospital Shelbyville will begin its next free Smoking Cessation Program on from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. Participants in the class will discuss a variety of science-based, proven methods to smoking cessation, which include education, skills training and social support. Open Door of Hope fundraiser
A fundraising event for The Open Door of Hope will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 16 in the parking lot of the Shelby County Public Library. People may rent a box for $30, and are encouraged to raise pledges over and above that base rent. Participants will sleep in the box overnight with only a couple of necessities. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be provided by the Finchville Ruritan Club, and there will be prizes for those who raise the most rent. There will be a free T-shirt for each participant, and no one will be allowed to have electronic devices except a cell phone for emergency calls only. UK alumni golf scramble
The Shelby County UK Alumni Association hosts its annual golf scramble Sept. 16 at the Shelbyville Country Club. Foster care/adoption program
The Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) is forming classes for their foster care and adoption program. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, married or single, financially stable and have an income, in good physical and mental health, meet safety requirements including background checks, and all adults in the home must successfully complete 32 hours of training. CHFS is in specific need of foster/adoptive homes willing to accept teenagers, large sibling groups (three or more), medically fragile kids, kids of a different race/ethnicity and kids currently available for adoption on the Special Needs Adoption Web site. Story hour at the library
Story hour registration is now going on at the Shelby County Public Library. Registration is required. Call 633-3803, E-mail: youthservices@scplibrary.net or come into the Library to register. These programs fill up fast so don’t delay. The schedule will be 10-10:30 a.m. for birth to 2-year-olds, Baby Time with Elaine; 11-11:35 a.m. for ages 2 to 6-year-olds, story time with Elaine, no registration required; teen and ‘tween programming with Sherry Bogard on Tuesdays. Wednesdays’ schedule with Bogard is Toddler Time, 10-10:35 a.m., 11-11:35 a.m. and 1:30-2:15 p.m. for ages 2 to 3-year-olds; and Afterschool, 4-4:45 p.m., for kindergarten through fifth grade. On Thursday will be Baby Time, 9:30-10 a.m. and 10:30-11 a.m., for ages birth to 2-year-olds, and Preschool, 1:30-2:15 p.m. for 4- to 5-year-olds.
Movie night at Red Orchard
Movie Night is the fourth Saturday of each month. Megamind will play on Saturday at the barn at Red Orchard Park. Bring comfortable chairs or blankets for the ground. Finchville festival contests
The Finchville Ruritan Club seeks entries for a cake decorating contest, biggest pumpkin contest and craft contest, to be shown and judged during the Finchville Fall Festival, Sept, 24-25. Bring your finished products to the club anytime on Sept. 23 or early on Sept. 24. The judging will take place throughout the day. Winners will be chosen before the auction on Saturday.
Miller Outdoor Center open

The Shelby County Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday, rain or shine, through Oct. 29. The market is located in the Coots Barn at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. Feed the Hungry
Help feed a hungry family by participating in the National Feed the Hungry Program. The Shelbyville Walmart is supporting Operation Care’s food pantry by being the designated drop off center for non-perishable items. Items most needed are crackers, peanut butter, cereal, oatmeal, juices, Kool-Aid, canned meats, powered milk, sugar, pasta and sauce, Hamburger Helper and canned fruits.
