Cycling series to roll through Waddy

If you’ve ever watched Lance Armstrong ride past the throngs of fans in the Tour de France, here’s your chance to get a taste of it.

It’s not exactly the French countryside, but the McDonald’s Kentuckiana Spring Classic Series will roll through Waddy on Sunday. Cyclists will speed through a 10-mile loop that will test everyone from beginning amateurs to junior and professionals.

The race will start at the Waddy Ruritan Club on Kings Highway and head south on Kentucky 395 before circling around at Scott’s Pike and heading back to the Ruritan Club.

The local Shelbyville bike store, Main Street Bikes, will have a team in the race.

“Our team, Main Street Velo, is made up mostly of Shelby County riders,” Tom Waggener said.

He said the shop, along with Todd Heady of Head First Performance, worked to get the Spring Series to Shelby County.

“It’s something that’s been going on for a few years now, and we wanted to try to get it here,” he said. “Road races are becoming more popular, and this race is going to bring a number of the better races from around the area in.”

This is the third race in the series, with six more this season. The group has already ridden in Louisville and Lexington, and they will have several races in Indiana, along with Frankfort, Somerset and a season-ending race back in Louisville.

Waggener said people are encouraged to come out to watch the race.

“Of course, there will be a lot going on at the Ruritan Club on Kings Highway,” he said. “Another good spot to watch will be at the corner of 395 and Scott’s Pike. That’s the one significant hill on the course, so the riders will be going a lot slower.”

The first race will be for juniors, ages 15-18, and will start at 11 a.m.; the day’s final race will be the women’s race at 12:20.
