The SCHS boys’ cross-country team rested it’s varsity runners for the regular season’s final meet, and Coach Randall McDowell gave his junior varsity squad a chance to run against the top competition.
The younger runners fared well, finishing ninth Saturday out of 16 teams from Class 3A at the Kentucky Track and Cross County Coaches Association meet at Masterson Station Park in Lexington.
Freshmen Tony Redemann and Devon Fielding led the way, placing 31st and 32nd. Redemann’s time of 19 minutes, 3.51 seconds for 5 kilometers beat Fielding by just 32 hundredths of a second.
Rounding out the rest of the varsity team were sophomores Alex Hamilton – 66th in 22:02 – and Trey Holt – 70th in 20:11 – and senior Andy Dunn – 106th in 22:25.
The middle-school and sixth grade-and-under state races were also held at the meet. Shelby County didn’t have full five-man teams compete in either race, but did have individuals in both races.
In the 4K middle school race eighth-grader Justin Downs was first for Shelby County, finishing 33rd out of 431 individuals with a time of 15:21. Downs will also run in the regional meet with the varsity squad Saturday.
Also in the middle school 4K were eighth-grader Alexander Dunn, who placed 338th with a time of 19:12, and seventh-grader Ethan Bailey who finished 415th in 23:24.
