A one-hour New Volunteer Training Class for the Shelby County Humane Society is 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Shelby County Extension Office. There is no charge for the class, but those attending are encouraged to bring something for the animals. A volunteer T-shirt will be available for $10. Pre-registration for the class is required. Boy Scout event
Boy Scout Troop 137 is having open house 7-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan 31, at the Finchville Baptist Church, Hwy 55 South, 5 miles south of I-64. It is open to all boys from 5th grade and up, who are considering scouting. There will presentations and demonstrations from the boys and leaders of Troop 137. Refreshments will be served.
Cell phones collected
Cell Phones for Soldiers and the Shelby County Public Library are collecting used cell phones to help keep troops connected with their families. Phones may be donated at the Shelby County Public Library, 309 8th St. The drop-off box is located in the rotunda of the library.
Kids Korner at Centenary United Methodist Church is 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, Jan. 19. Van pick up in Marshall Trailer Court is 9:35 a.m. and in Martinsville is 9:45 a.m. Future dates are Feb. 16, March 15, April 19, May 17 and June 21. Children are sent home with a take-home snack. The Family Activity Center of Clear Creek Park is offering Tumble Time for children. Cathy Wilhoit, certified fitness instructor, will lead the classes. There are classes for 2-3 year olds, 4-5 year olds, and 6-8 year olds. Call the FAC office for more information, 633-5059.
A Loving Choice Pregnancy Center
The center offers free pregnancy testing, confidential peer counseling, and information on all choices in an unplanned pregnancy, baby and maternity clothing and equipment, parenting and cooking classes and referrals to local resources. All our services are free and open to anyone. Center hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays, 2-6 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays. No appointment is necessary. The Shelbyville/Shelby County Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a cornhole tournament 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Family Activity Center gymnasium.

Tax help for seniors
The AARP Foundation is presenting help with income tax returns Feb. 7 through April 10, at Highland Baptist Church, 511 Mount Eden Rd. This service is available for those with low and middle incomes. Seniors 60 and older are given special attention. Appointments are available, 633-3665.
