Collins softball team beats Owen, but SCHS loses

Sophomore Shelbi Poehlein went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBIs to lead the host Collins to a 7-4 victory over Owen County on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman catcher Janelle Hynes and sophomore Sam Veal added two hits apiece, and junior Lindsey Ketcham scored two runs for the Titans (11-13).

Senior Lauren Shepherd picked up the victory on the mound, pitching a complete game and allowing one earned run on five hits, while walking one and striking out seven.

Collins, which hosted Bullitt Central on Thursday, plays at Shelby County at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

OWEN COUNTY 9, SHELBY COUNTY 8:After losing to the Titans, the Rebels (6-8) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to nip the Rockets (8-14) at Collins. Shelby County lost despite a season-high 17 hits.

Freshman Sydney Wright, who was the losing pitcher, led the Rockets at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored. Seniors Keaton Jesse and Ari Jones, sixth-grader Elizabeth Ivers and freshmen Abby Wills, Savannah Smeaton and Jessie Vermillion added two hits apiece. Ivers, Smeaton and Wills, who had a 2-run homer in the second, each drove in two runs.

Shelby County, which hosted Oldham County on Thursday, will host Bullitt East at 6 p.m. today before hosting Collins at 5:30 p.m. Monday.


BOYS’ TENNIS: Collins 4, Anderson 1

The Titans’ victories at Clear Creek Park came in Nos. 2 and 3 singles matches and both doubles matches.

Collins' No. 2 singles player, seventh-grader Jared Baltzell, triumphed, 6-4, 6-2, and at No. 3 freshman Tucker Judy won, 6-1, 6-0. In doubles the No. 1 team Derek Stivers and Cy Dutton were victorious, 6-1, 6-2, and Luke Noel and Max Kroening triumphed, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2.

SHELBY COUNTY LOSES TWO: The Rockets lost twice, 4-1, to Oldham County at Clear Creek Park on Monday and to Western Hills at Frankfort on Tuesday.

Against the Colonels, Shelby County’s lone triumph came from sophomore Jimmy Welman and senior Matt Wall at No. 2 doubles, where they won, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.

Against the Wolverines, the Rockets’ lone victory came from Harrison Baldwin at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-2).


GIRLS’ TENNIS: CHS, SCHS both fall, 3-2

Visiting Anderson County edged Collins at Clear Creek Park. The Titans’ victories came from junior Paige Kregor at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1, and sophomore Ashley Quinn at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

WESTERN HILLS 3, SHELBY COUNTY 2:Against the host Wolverines on Tuesday the Rockets (7-4) got victories at Nos. 1 and 3 singles. At No. 1, junior Shimizu Manu won, 6-2, 6-3, and at No. 3 sophomore Emalee Turley won, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4). 

The Rockets, who played at Carroll County on Thursday, host Bullitt East on Monday before traveling to Gallatin County on Tuesday.


TRACK & FIELD: Collins, Oldham split

The Collins boys’ track & field team defeated visiting Oldham County in an old-fashioned dual meet Tuesday, 37-35, but the girls lost, 56-15.

On the boys’ side, the Titans won the distance and 800 sprint medley relays and a trio of individual events. Junior Masai Whyte won the 200-meter dash (24.8 seconds), junior Alex Sells captured the 800 (2:11.2), and senior Terez Smith triumphed in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches). The Titans also received runner-up finishes from senior Devon Fielding in the 800 and junior Lawson Page in the 200 and long jump. Collins also got third-place finishes from sophomore Gabriel Nash in the 800, junior Michael Goss in the discus and junior Kris Jones in the shot put.

In the girls’ meet the Titans won a pair of events – the 800 sprint medley and the high jump, won by sophomore Shai Anne Moorman (4-10). They received runner-up finishes from Brittney Smith in the 200 and its distance medley relay team and took third in the 200 (sophomore Sarah Erhard) and the discus (freshman Kenedi Harris).

Collins will compete in Oldham County’s Sundown Invitational next Thursday.



The Titans lost three matches last week in Sacred Heart Academy’s Braveheart Tournament. Mercy topped the Titans, 14-5, Wednesday, when senior Miranda Maier scored two goals and senior Chloe Crumpton, junior Katie Herick and sophomore Audrey Adcock added one each.

The RebelHawks outlasted Collins, 5-4, Thursday. Herick had two goals for the Titans, and junior Maggie Garratt and senior Emily Thompson chipped in with one apiece.

North Oldham clobbered Collins, 17-2, Friday. Herick and senior Marysa Maier tallied the Titans’ goals in that match.

Collins, which played at Kentucky Country Day on Thursday, hosts Mercy Academy at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
