Collins romps in softball; late surge buries Shelby

Senior Lauren Shepherd gave up only three hits in five innings and helped her cause by going 3-for-3 at the plate Tuesday to lead the Collins softball team to an 11-1, 5-inning victory over visiting Western Hills.


The Wolverines (0-4) scored their only run in the top of the first inning, however, the Titans answered immediately in their half of the inning, when Danaria Lewis and Sydney Cloyd hit back-to-back home runs to give Collins the lead for good.

The Titans (2-1) tacked on five more runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to end the game two innings early.

In addition to giving up the three hits Shepherd allowed one earned run while walking four and striking out seven. In addition to leading Collins’ 12-hit attack, she also scored two runs.

Lewis, Shelbi Poehlein and Alex Baker added two hits apiece. Also, Lewis and Bailey Rankin had two RBIs each, and Rankin and Poehlein scored twice.

The Titans, who hosted Louisville Southern on Thursday, play Spencer County at 7 tonight in their first game of the TSOA Tournament at Meade County. Collins will take on Louisville Male and the host Green Wave on Saturday.

MANUAL 10, SHELBY COUNTY 2:The visiting Crimsons (1-0) outscored the Rockets, 9-2, in the final four innings at the Shelby County Athletic Complex. Shelby County freshman pitcher Sydney Wright only gave up three earned runs, but the Rockets were plagued by seven errors.

Shelby County (1-1) plays at Henry County at 5:30 p.m. today.


BOYS’ TENNIS: SCHS, Collins lose

In what likely will be their biggest test of the regular season, the Rockets were swept, 5-0, by host South Oldham in Crestwood on Tuesday.

Shelby County’s closest match came at No. 3 singles, where senior Zach Brown was defeated in three sets.

The Rockets, who play Collins today, host Anderson County on Monday before playing at Oldham County on Tuesday.

WESTERN HILLS 3, COLLINS 2:The Wolverines edged the host Titans on Tuesday at Clear Creek Park. Both of Collins’ victories came at doubles. The No. 1 team of Wil Johnson and Cy Dutton triumphed, 6-3, 6-2, and at No. 2 Max Kroening and Tucker Judy won, 6-3, 6-4.

The Titans (1-1), who play Shelby County today, plays at Trimble County on Monday, then hosts Gallatin County on Tuesday.


GIRLS’ TENNIS: Collins 3, Western Hills 2

The Titans picked up their victory of the season, edging Western Hills on Tuesday at Clear Creek Park. All three of their triumphs came in singles, and two of those were via third-set super tiebreakers. At No. 1 junior Paige Kregor was victorious, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 sophomore Ashley Quinn won, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6), and at No. 3 seventh-grader Tatum Watson won, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10).

The Titans (1-1), who play Shelby County today, hosts Gallatin County on Tuesday.
