Collins High School used a 6-run second inning to build all the cushion it would need to defeat Tates Creek, 6-4, in the first round of the KHSAA State Baseball Tournament at Whitaker Park in Lexington.
Collins (33-6), playing in its first State Tournament, will play Henderson County on Wednesday night in teh quarterfinals.
Tates Creek (32-7) had won 19 games in a row, but a rally that included big hits by Logan Bailey, Nate Clifton and Buddy Johnson put the Commodores in too deep of a hole.
That's because Big Dan Sanders, who entered the game 10-0 this season, shut them out for the first four innings before allowing singe runs in the fifth and sixth.
Then in the seventh, Tates Creek scored two quick runs before Johnson, also unbeaten in sometimes starting/sometimes relieving role, picked up the save by getting the final outs.
