CRESTWOOD – The Collins baseball team held off host South Oldham for a 7-6 victory Monday afternoon in the 8th Region Tournament.

The Titans got a huge relief effort from Buddy Johnson and some timely hits to advance to Tuesday night’s region semifinals. Collins (30-6) will take on the winner between Simon Kenton and Gallatin County at 5:30 p.m. in Crestwood.

The Dragons (19-16) took the early lead with one run in the top of the first before the Titans took the lead with a 4-run third inning that was highlighted by Zac Wiley’s two-run single and Mason Jeffries’ RBI-single.

South Oldham scored two runs in the top of the fourth before Collins answered with a trio of runs – on RBIs by Nate Clifton, Johnson and Wiley – in the bottom of the inning.

The Dragons then loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth. They scored one run off Paul Miller, who relieved starter Dan Sanders, before Johnson came on. He gave up a leadoff walk, to score another run for South Oldham, before inducing a pop out. Johnson then gave up a sacrifice fly before getting Alex Alsup to fly out to end the threat.

In the seventh Johnson retired the Dragons in order for his third save of the season. Johnson struck out two and walked one in the final two frames.

Sanders improved to 10-0 on the season, giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits while walking four and striking out six.

Clifton led the Titans’ 10-hit attack with three hits while Wiley had a pair of hits and a trio of RBIs.
