Allen Chapel

Burks Branch Baptist

The Women on Mission are still collecting school supplies to donate to the local schools. They are also collecting items for the backpack food ministry for children. All food items must be non-perishable, easy for a child to open containers, no glass, no refrigeration needed, though they can be non-heated items or microwaveable. The food should be as nutritious as possible. It must be single serving size and small enough to fit into a backpack with several other items. Some suggestions are: canned meats with pop tops such as Vienna Sausages, tuna, Beenie Weenies; juice boxes, milk boxes, small boxed cereal, fruit cups, chips, cheese or peanut butter crackers, peanuts, etc. Donations are needed for the Open Door of Hope Men's Shelter meal on Saturday night. Contact Autumn if you would like to supply a dish. Ray Perry is collecting register receipts dated Aug. 10-31 from Rural King for a church fundraiser. The choir and congregation are invited to attend the Fifth Sunday Singing and Fellowship at Dover Baptist Church on Aug. 31. The church is a collection site for WaterStep. Donations of new and used shoes create clean drinking water for people in need. Shoes of all types are acceptable – from flip-flops to high heels, from boots to football cleats. FCC also is collecting used hearing-aid batteries, box tops, Campbell’s labels, eyeglasses, plastic bags from Kroger, Walmart, etc., coupons either current or expired, canceled postage stamps, pop tops from aluminum cans for mission projects. Kroger gift cards may be purchased from the church. Each time a card is purchased or reloaded, the church earns 4 percent. The cards make excellent gifts. First Presbyterian

Specific jobs are still in the works, but could include helping at Operation Care, A Loving Choice, Open Door of Hope and delivering beds with A Place to Sleep. See Lynn Whittaker for more information. A Place to Sleep needs people to knit or crochet blocks for blankets. Blocks are generally somewhere in the 7” x 9” size, any color, any stitch you like. Great use of scrap yarns. We’re shooting for 400 blocks by Oct. 25. Items collected for school art projects include clear plastic water and soda bottles (rinsed and empty please), wire clothes hangers, knee highs (nude or white – without runs or snags), smooth, palm-sized stones, divided plastic containers (like veggie trays from grocers). Arriba Ninostutoring program has been suspended for the fall semester due to a lack of volunteer tutors. Consider getting involved in this great, short-term commitment volunteer opportunity from which you will get long-term wonderful memories. For more information, contact Diann Cook. Did you know that you could donate musical instruments to the Shelby County School System through a Partners In Education Program at First Presbyterian Church and help students who otherwise couldn’t afford to be in band or orchestra?
