This Sunday, Christmas @ Claudia's will gladden the hearts of many Shelby Countians.

The $30,000 charitable event will serve 1,500 people from the Shelby County community.

Tom and Cherry Settle, owners of  Claudia Sander's Dinner House where the event will be held, donate all food and their facility to host the event.

In addition to Christmas dinner, each child will receive a blanket, candy, hygiene package, book, teddy bear, hat and mittens, a gift, and a basketball signed by retired University of Louisville Coach Denny Crum.

All gifts for the children are purchased with money that has been donated by businesses and Shelby County residents. Citizens Union (CUB) Bank is the event's Platinum Sponsor. Without them, the event could not take place, said Louise Riley, general manager of Claudia Sander's Dinner House.

“They donated $10,000 for this year's event and all of the teddy bears,” she said. “Also, CUB Bank employees have been collecting hats and mittens for the children and many have volunteered to work the event.”

Operation Care, a well-known charitable organization in the community, collects donations earmarked for Christmas @ Claudia's and helps with applications and mailings.

Christmas @ Claudia's, which is in its 4th year, is a large event with more than 30 financial contributors and hundreds of volunteers, Riley said.

“Each has a common goal of goodwill to make this special time better for the children of Shelby County,” she said.

Attendance at the event has to be reserved in advance through the school system and the deadline has passed for people to sign up.
