For the first time, the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce has begun a membership drive, according to executive director Shelley Goodwin.
The board of directors and the membership committee have been challenged to contact about 100 potential members within the next three weeks.
According to Goodwin, the push for new members is in response to the economic stresses felt by local community.
Membership in the Chamber of Commerce offers contacts that will ultimately help businesses. "We know businesses need all the opportunities they can find to grow and sustain their business," she said.
Current membership in the chamber stands at about 350 various retail businesses, services, restaurants, realtors and other industries.
The Chamber of Commerce's Web site (shelbycountykychamber.com) includes a listing of members, resources for business development and other announcements. The Chamber calendar of events includes workshops and local upcoming networking opportunities.
"We know the Chamber can help. One new contact through the Chamber . . . can help a business investment." Goodwin said.
Fees to join the Chamber vary, depending on number of employees and type of business, for example. For information about joining the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, contact Shelley Goodwin, 633-1636; or membership committee chair, Kurt Turner, 633-6060.
