Top 4 return for young team

The Collins girls’ golf team has a new coach, but many familiar faces return from last season.

Suzanne Cates, also the school’s softball coach, takes over a squad that brings back a quartet of its top players from 2012.

“It’s a completely different group of girls and a completely different sport; it’s fun,” Cates said of her new role.

The Titans return their top four scorers from last year’s Region 5 Tournament, where they finished eighth out of 12 teams: junior Mary Borders, sophomores Sydney Rogers and Claire Watts and freshman Mallori Webb. Borders, the team’s most consistent player last season, played a lot of junior golf over the summer.

Cates said she expects Borders, Rogers, Watts and Webb to lead the Titans again this season, which starts Saturday in Shelby County’s Rockets Classic at Weissinger Hills Golf Course.

“I think those four girls, they should be pretty competitive,” Cates said.

The player who’ll complement them, though, remains unknown.

“The fifth spot is definitely up for grabs right now,” Cates said. “It’ll change [throughout the season].”

Several returning players and a couple newcomers will battle it out for that final spot. The returnees are senior Jasmine Valentine, junior Cori Taylor, eighth-grader Rachel Goodwin and seventh-graders Kaylee Smith and Rylee Suttor.

“It’s a pretty young group,” Cates said.

Two newcomers are freshman Madeline Johnson and eighth-grader Sydney Schweitzer.

Cates said her goals for the team are to “get better every match,” and for “the younger ones to learn.”

After the SCHS event, the Titans play in Henry County’s invitational on Monday and will have their first match Aug. 12 against Christian Academy of Louisville at the Shelbyville Country Club.
