Tragedy was nearly averted when a trailer truck struck a car that was stopped in the left lane of Interstate 64 with the engine running, police said.
The incident happened on March 6 as officers were working an accident on I-64 eastbound at the 36-mile marker just after 5:30 a.m. At that time, a truck driver stopped and told Shelbyville Police Officer Bruce Gentry that a car was stopped on the interstate nearby.
