Just a few weeks before his team’s season was set to begin Shelby County baseball coach Bart “Rudy” Roettger was thrown one hell of a curveball.

On Feb. 24 Roettger was preparing for school, readying to teach Algebra to 30 freshmen, when he got a phone call he’ll never forget. Roettger had recently been to the dermatologist to get a spot on his right forearm checked out and he was about to get the unexpected results.

“Malignant melanoma,” the doctor on the other end of the phone told him.
